CR & Sequester Force Service Cuts

As the final days get down to the sequestration deadline of March 1 and the (budget) Continuing Resolution (CR) extension until March 27, the service branches are planning for implementations to meet the mandates of the law.  Here's an Army, Air Force and Navy overview as it most directly impacts Washington state, its citizens and its economy.

It is important to remember the broad impacts on the federal budgets, but also the exemptions from the actions.  Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security as all exempt from sequestration.  Also exempted, uniformed military personnel. Of course, the proposed military pay increase has been reduced to 1%.

But civilian defense employees as well as other federal employees are subject to furloughs.  Hiring restrictions have already been applied to civilian temp workers, term workers and hiring to fill vacant positions.

By the same measure, let contracts for construction, goods and services will probably extend to the life of the contract.  The defense industrial sector and acquisitions are still being evaluated as to best alternative options.

Speaker: STATUS OF JOINT BASE LEWIS-MCCHORD
Col. Charles Hodges, Joint Base Commander
& Col. Valerie Hasberry, Deputy Joint Base Commander

Speaker: RALLY POINT 6: Veteran & Military Family Outreach Center

Colonel Anthony Henderson, Special Assistant to Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Office of Warrior and Family Support will join Tacomans  Anne Sprute, The Unfinished Mission & Linda Nguyen, Workforce Central and Ben Maciel, a veteran and graduate from the composite technician program.

Communities across the U.S. are grappling with veterans’ reintegration issues as local communities become the new “home base” for veterans and their families. Pierce County is no different.  JBLM is expected a normal transition of 6,000 service members out of the military each year for the next four years.  The Dept. of Veterans Affairs has projected that nationwide an estimated 13,000 veterans per year who are leaving the service have a desire to locate in Washington through 2016.  The proposed solution is a community-based coordinating entity with access to workforce and social services through community partnerships and outreach.

NEXT MEETING: MG Richard Thomas, CG, Western Region Medical Command, March 13, 7:30 a.m., La Quinta Inn & Suites
